I prefer using OpenOffice as an office suite because I’m a huge fan of Open Source.

A few times when trying to import my source files, OmegaT would just not display anything, as if there was no source file at all. And everytime there was a different reason for that.

1. Make sure you save your file in .odt format
2. Make sure your source file is not in use by a different program (not even OpenOffice itself)
3. Make sure your project files are set up correctly.
4. If your file uses an unusual encoding or a lot of fromatting, apply the correct file filter (because this gives me such a hard time, I prefer removing all formatting in the source file, which makes it a bit harder afterwards when reapplying formatting)

All suggestions are welcome, I’m a CAT tool beginner myself.

I was very disappointed to see that no translator was interested although the source text was not long.

I’m beginning to think that the prize was not tempting enough (Nicole Mones – Lost in Translation + a free website), and I should have probably offered money. I am disappointed, I was expecting a bit of friendly rivalry amongst fellow translators, just for the sake of having fun, but obviously this does not motivate people anymore..

Most of the times communication meant gossip, and information was almost nonexistent. Only the nobles could afford messengers, and only they were able to write and read news. The poor people relied on traveling merchants, minstrels and jongleurs to send the news to others, so information got old before it reached its destination. But there was anticipation and excitement in receiving the news, as it was always something important. No one ever sent messages about trivial little things.

The deadline of the contest is the 30th of September 2010. Please send the translations before this date.

It is only laughable that such ignorance finds its place on the internet. The sad part is that some people actually believe these inanities.

So I’ll start by saying that Romanians and Russians belong to different cultural/linguistic groups, and not because I want to, but because of their history. And it only takes a few minutes on wikipedia before you decide to write such untrue things in a public place, be it virtual or not.

Romanians are a Latin people, whereas Russians are Slavic. A Slavic migration reached the actual territory of Romania in the 6th-7th century AD, and there are slavic traces embedded in the Romanian language. However, early Slavic features in Romanian have primarily Balkan (Bulgarian) character, whereas later borrowings (especially in the modern Republic of Moldova, where the majority of the population continues to be bilingual or even multilingual), have Eastern European (mostly Russian and less frequently Ukrainian or Ruthenian) origin. This again proves that Romanians don not have a Russian character by origin.

And if you, people who create “Romanians-are-Russians” type of Facebook page, don’t understand these arguments, there is the primary school explanation for you: it is easy for Romanians to understand and learn languages like Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and French, whereas it is impossible for them to understand Russian/Bulgarian/Ukrainian, etc. Wondering why? …Because the former group of languages are Romance (based on Latin), whereas the latter is Slavic.

And do you want an interesting fact? There is a Slavic minority language in Germany, called Sorbian. Yes, Slavic..

The description of this interesting Facebook page that has 22 fans (!!!) says “This site is dedicated to show the world that Romanians are really cultural Russians with Moldavan genetic stock!!!”. First, learn some English! Second, it’s “Moldavians”. Third, Moldavians live in a Republic that was part of Romania, thus they are genetically Romanians. It’s similar to the fact that an egg can’t give birth to a hen, if this makes it a big clearer..

What’s also a bit confusing is the monkey picture added to the photo album of this page. What has this got to do with anything? And do you know that when you assert something you have to be capable of sustaining it with arguments?

Also, it is disrespectful to alter a national flag in any way. You have, by adding a communist emblem in the centre of the flag. Haven’t you heard that 22 years ago Romania went through a bloody Revolution in order to liberate itself from the Communism? Don’t you know that you are offending an entire state belonging to the European Union? A state that has a history of thousands of years and a wonderful culture that you will never be open-minded enough to discover?

And after all, if Romanians were Russians, what would the problem be?

Russia is an amazing country, with an extremely rich cultural heritage, that people like you will never understand because one needs a certain level of intelligence to be capable of learning and understanding.

Competition is normal and good, but undercutting prices unfairly is definitely a bad thing for fellow translators and for the translation industry in general!

Personally, I think that this line makes them look not only cheap, but also desperate for work. Why would they be cheap and desperate?

Probably because the quality of their work is quite poor or probably because they are beginners. Still, low prices will not do them a favour, as they won’t be able to put their prices up at a later date, and it makes customers question the quality of their work.

Changing the price of your work so easily also means that the real value of it is questionable..

I would like to know what other translators/agencies think…
